The Faculty of Social Sciences is guided by the mission statement of the University of Göttingen and its founding motto – ‘For the common good’ (in publica commoda).

The aim is to provide teaching that goes beyond the mere imparting of knowledge and encourages students to take on responsibility in social, environmental and economic contexts. At our Faculty, diversity and sustainability are key priorities: the degree programme’s design fosters the ability to reflect on social, environmental and economic interrelationships, to act in a manner sensitive to discrimination, and to help shape sustainable solutions.

This is put into practice in a variety of ways: for example, in the Bachelor’s programme in Social Sciences, individual module descriptions were recently revised so that issues of social diversity are now integrated and discussed in the introductory module B.Sowi.100. In doing so, unequal power relations relating to dimensions such as age, (non-)disability, ethnicity/race, gender, social background, religion/worldview and/or sexual orientation are addressed and reflected upon. This example illustrates how the faculty is working in practical terms not only to embed diversity and sustainability in theory, but also to actively implement them in day-to-day academic life.
